Beware of outrages charges for international packages
I recently bought a screen for my phone from Aliexpress. I paid a total of $131.88. The item was $81.43 and shipping was $51.45.
Item arrived in SA on the 23rd of July. Upon querying the status of the package, I was asked to send my bank statement that shows the amount I paid. I did so and DHL returned with an invoice detailing penalties and processing fees to the tune of R1550!
Upon querying the amounts, I was told the seller declared the item at $10 and the penalty and processing fee was because of the undervaluation of the item. I DID NOT ask the seller to declare a low value on the item as I know if caught, will probably result in my package detained.
I have since opened a dispute with Aliexpress, but DHL refuses to listen to reason or take this up with the seller and keep telling me I am liable for these charges.
How can someone who legally tries to buy an item and is fully prepared to pay the duties and VAT on the package once it arrives in SA be held accountable for these fees? Surely there must be mechanisms in place to protect law abiding citizens who wish to import small items in SA from dishonest sellers and of course shipping agents charging outrages fees?
I will gladly pay my vat and duties to get my package, and DHL can continue the fight for the penalties and fees with the seller. I refuse to be held ransom for something I DID NOT DO!
