A Catalogue of Failures: 11-Day Ordeal for a 2-3 Day "Express" Delivery
My recent experience with DHL was a complete and utter failure of logistics, communication, and customer service. While stranded in Botswana with a broken-down vehicle, a critical part was sent from South Africa via a DHL partner, Postnet, with the explicit promise of a 2 to 3-day delivery. This promise turned into an 11-day nightmare that cost me thousands in additional expenses.
The catalogue of errors began immediately. Despite the package being dropped off at Postnet at 2:00 PM on July 22nd, DHL failed to collect it that day. A full day was lost before it was even in their system. This was followed by significant paperwork issues caused by a Postnet employee incorrectly filling out the sender's details, leading to another day's delay while we rectified their mistake.
While one could point to Postnet for these initial fumbles, they are operating as a DHL agent. When I pay for a DHL service, I expect DHL to manage its entire logistics chain from start to finish. It's no different than ordering from Amazon. If their chosen courier fails to deliver, my contract and my issues are with Amazon. DHL is responsible for its partners, and this was just the first failure in a long chain that belonged entirely to DHL.
For over a week, the part remained stagnant in Johannesburg. The excuses were endless and frankly, unbelievable. One day we were told SARS was offline, the next it was BURS. All the while, customer service offered hollow promises that "today it will go." It wasn't until midnight on a Thursday, more than a week after it was sent, that the package finally left Johannesburg. Upon its arrival in Botswana, I was hit with an unexpected and uncommunicated "handling fee" of R550, on top of the already steep R2600 paid for the initial "door-to-door" service. To add final insult to injury, DHL does not deliver on Saturdays, so after this excruciating wait, I was forced to collect the package myself.
The 11-day delay, for a service promised in 2-3 days, is inexcusable. The financial consequence of this incompetence was an additional R2200 per day in rental and accommodation fees. My initial 3 day wait which would have costed R6600 was ballooned to R24 200. This wasn't just a late delivery; it was a cascade of failures at every single step of the process. If it is ever within my power, I will never use DHL or their partners again.
This is a classic bait-and-switch. A customer pays a premium for an express service based on a clear timeframe, but when the company fails catastrophically, they use the fine print to claim that promise was never binding.
What is the purpose of advertising an "express" service if you take no responsibility for meeting the timeline?
