The South African Department of Labour (that does everything but)
The initial use of the UIF USSD number to check the status of my physical UIF claim inadvertently led to the cancellation of the physical application. Subsequent attempts to follow up on the claim status through USSD queries initially provided assurance with the message "payment in progress." However, when contacting the UIF call center to inquire about the payment date, I was informed that my physical application, submitted in person, was successfully received, but the USSD feedback was inaccurate. The call center agent clarified that the USSD number is intended solely for online applications and does not cover physical submissions.
This frustrating situation unfolded after enduring:
*Nine months without payment, persisting unemployment, and a lack of foreseeable job prospects. *Numerous in-person visits to the Labour department, characterized by extensive queues, unhelpful offline status from consultants, and the need for repeated visits. *Unsuccessful online application due to verification failure, coupled with unacknowledged emails to unlock my online application. *Submission of all required documents with no confirmation SMS indicating a successful application. *Misleading information from a Labour department consultant in December 2023, promising payment before December 22nd, only for all new payments to be canceled on December 20th, contrary to the announced closure for the festive season starting on the 22nd. *A lengthy in-person follow-up on my claim status in early January 2024, involving hours of waiting in a queue outside the Cape Town Labour department branch, resulting in no consultation and a directive to return the next day.
As of now, my query remains unresolved, adding to the ongoing challenges and uncer*****ies surrounding my UIF claim.
