STANDARD BANK & HOME AFFAIRS – A FULL DAY OF FRUSTRATION

I have spent the entire day trying to apply online for passports for my twin girls, and the experience with both Home Affairs and Standard Bank Centurion Lifestyle Centre has been nothing short of infuriating.

The Home Affairs online system is terrible. It initially requires you to sign the first page of the application, yet it provides no functionality, guidance, or instructions on how to do so. After wasting time trying every possible action, you eventually discover—through pure trial and error—that you must press the “Submit” button, which then takes you to the branch payment option.

From there, you cannot make an appointment until you pay, but the Home Affairs website gives absolutely no instructions on how to complete the payment since the payment option is not linked on their website, like most basic online shopping sites. There is no payment link, no steps, nothing. You are then forced to call your bank to figure out how to process the payment or get the bank to initiate the payment on their side. Home Affairs expects you to simply *know* this information.

This now leads to Standard Bank. I had to spend almost an hour on the phone with Standard Bank just to understand how to make the payment and to get the assistance in processing the payment, because again, Home Affairs doesn’t provide any clarity. One consultant I managed to speak to (I believe his name was Mlungisi) was excellent and patient, and I genuinely appreciated his assistance.

But the experience with Standard Bank Centurion Lifestyle Centre has been unacceptable. Their phone numbers do not work—neither the numbers listed online nor the ones provided by other Standard Bank staff. I tried repeatedly, and not a single call went through. How is it that a major bank branch has no working contact numbers? This is completely unprofessional.

To make matters worse, once I finally processed the payment and returned to the Home Affairs site to make the appointments, the available slots I initially saw were now gone. I had to log in and out repeatedly and eventually managed to secure one appointment for one twin. When I went back to book the second appointment at Centurion Lifestyle, suddenly no slots were available anymore.

I cannot overstate how ancient, inefficient, and frustrating the Home Affairs system is. No parent should spend an entire day trying to do something as basic as booking a passport appointment. The process is designed so poorly that it feels impossible to complete without hitting multiple dead ends.

Between the non-existent service at Home Affairs, the unreachable Standard Bank branch, and the sheer amount of time wasted, the entire experience has been unacceptable.

Can someone from Standard Bank Centurion Lifestyle please explain why none of their contact numbers work? If anything at Home Affairs worked (such as their landline) I would be interested to find out why their system is stuck in another century?

This has been a completely unnecessary and exhausting ordeal.
