After 6 weeks application cancelled with no reason given
After standing and waiting for a long time at the Somerset West Dept of Home Affairs, you are eventually let in only to sit almost forever while waiting to be photographed, watching how slow the staff walk around and how often they stop to chat to other staff members. Then you are finger printed and photographed etc and told to wait for documents to be checked and once again copied etc. After that. a very long wait is experienced for the process to reach a cashier and then you pay.. So my wife and I went through this and then we waited. There is no way to check the progress of your application, the online web site only caters for new applications, no menu for tracking etc. You can send an email, but sending emails to the DHA are simply ignored (Probably just too much like work). The phone number is a joke, it must have been installed on Marion Island because nobody, but nobody ever picks it up. So we waited, and waited. And now after 6 weeks we get emails saying our applications have been cancelled in one case, with no reason given, and postponed in the other wanting a copy of my ID, that I had brought along for the first visit and was copied by one of the slow walking staff. So it would appear that although there is talk of more electronic features, it would seem serious training of staff who are getting massive salaries and are still not able to do the simple tasks that are expected of them needs also to be looked at. The only solution available is to visit the local DHA office again and be prepared, once again to waste a full morning and a bit of the afternoon. A most frustrating experience.
