Who represents the City of Cape Town? Who are the people that make life-altering decisions on our behalf? Our local government is made up of Councillors who represent our interests and hopefully share similar values to ours. How does someone become a councillor? Let us have a look at the Democratic Alliance Ward Councillor Ian McMahon of Ward 115 (Cape Town CBD) …

Councillor Ian McMahon is the former owner of Crew *** Bar also known as “The *** *****house” amongst the *** community. How does the owner of a former *** club/brothel known for being a drug nest manage to slip through the cracks? These allegations became known when a patron posted an article on Facebook about the rampant drug use, prostitution, and unsafe conditions at Crew Bar. McMahon received assistance from underground figures in Cape Town to make the article disappear according to a source close to the event.

McMahon likes to present himself as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and he even hosted a charity event known as “MCQP”. The fundraiser was meant to be in support of a local LGBTQ+ shelter but credible sources allege not all of the proceeds went to the shelter… so where did they go?

Does the DA not have rigorous selection standards or are they blissfully unaware of their Councillor’s real past? McMahon would have had to lie about his past to put himself forward as a candidate for the ward by declaring that he had no “skeletons in the closet.” If the DA is as unaware of McMahon’s past… allow me to shed some light on it.

As members of the public, we are entitled to know whom we vote for and what kind of person we entrust with public office. Through speaking with various individuals (Who will remain anonymous for their own safety) who have had a past relationship with Councillor McMahon I was able to obtain shocking revelations that the public has a constitutional right to know about.

According to a former associate of McMahon, they regularly supp**** not only his club but him personally with various hard drugs such as crystal meth, ecstasy and khat, often delivered to McMahon’s homes at 117 Loader St and at 25 High Level Rd in Green Point. Does your Ward Councillor still use these drugs? Did the DA know about this? It does not stop there, according to an employee at The Rockwell Hotel, McMahon frequented the hotel with male **********s.

People can change, we would be unfair in our assessment of McMahon if we only looked at his past. What about his stint as your local Ward Councillor? McMahon has wasted no time in abusing his position by targeting his former competitors. Numerous bars in Cape Town have been victimised by McMahon. This is shocking considering that McMahon sits on the Economic Growth Portfolio Committee in Council, yet he is trying to hinder economic growth by trying to ruin his former competitors. In the wake of the pandemic, many businesses in the hospitality sector did not survive and those that did are fighting to recover in a post-pandemic world. The last thing they need is for a petty Ward Councillor to make things more difficult for them.
