Refusing Deposit Refund

After having bought a new apartment on the outskirts of Cape Town and excitedly starting my renovation, I got this company called DeKurt Electrical to do the plumbing and electrical work. Kurt, the owner, came out to look at the job and quoted R14k for the job including all the materials, asking for a 50% deposit before work can commence, which is normal, and I pay it via EFT.

Couple of days later Kurt arrives (late) with two guys, who he leaves at the apartment, they cut some grooves for new conduits into the walls and remove the geyser and basin, and leave what I deemed early (like 2pm). I ask Kurt when he'll be back, he says two days later. Since then it has been near impossible to get hold of him, he has intermittently blocked my whatsapps, my calls, and when I did get hold of him he delays the project indefinitely. After countless calls, I ask him for my deposit back. I send him an email detailing cancellation of contract with my banking details. No deposit repayment. Offer him a deadline before I got to police and small claims court, no deposit repayment. Now i'm proceeding to Small Claims Court. PLEASE do not use this guy!
