Taking advantage of an elderly woman
Subject: CWP (under CoGTA) is failing a 69-year-old pensioner after 10 years of service I am writing to express my deep disappointment with how the Community Work Programme (CWP), under the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Tembisa, has treated my 69-year-old grandmother after 10 years of dedicated service. She and other elderly participants were told to stop working because of their age. Since then, she has not been paid her final month's wages of R1,142. While some may think this is a small amount, it is not small to a pensioner whose only source of income is her old-age grant. There is no one employed in our household. My grandmother's grant is the only income we have. From that grant, she pays R1,000 every month for electricity, which gives us about 200 units, and she still has to buy food and pay for other basic necessities. Instead of using her grant to survive, she has been forced to spend it travelling to court to fight for money she has already earned. The UIF issue is equally concerning. After 10 years of service, she has reportedly been offered only R2,500 as a once-off payment, which has left us questioning whether her UIF benefits were correctly calculated. The emotional and physical impact has been devastating. The stress has become so severe that her medication dosage has had to be increased. During a court hearing on Wednesday, she nearly collapsed because of the stress, and the commissioner had to adjourn the proceedings for 10 minutes so she could recover. No 69-year-old woman should have to spend her pension grant fighting in court for money that she has earned. She deserves dignity, respect, and fair treatment after serving the programme for 10 years. I am appealing to CoGTA and those responsible for managing the CWP to urgently resolve this matter by paying her outstanding R1,142, providing a full explanation regarding her UIF benefits, and ensuring that no other elderly participant is subjected to the same treatment. We are not asking for special treatment. We are simply asking for justice and for my grandmother to receive what she has rightfully earned.
