Online shopping disappointment

<p>I recently bought a t-shirt from overseas that cost me roughly R110. From what I've read, if the cost of the item is less than R400 it should not incur any customs duties. However, I received a notification from my courier that my package is being held at customs, and that their duties and taxes amounted to roughly R150. Now, I am aware that clothing can be charged up to 45%, plus VAT, but this amount makes no sense to me. I tried contacting them about it, but every person I contact just says "not my area, contact SARS", but these e-mail addresses were found on the SARS website for customs and excise queries. My only question really, is why an amount below R400 was taxed so heavily, and how they reached the amount that I had to eventually pay. It is small fries, I know, but it adds up! Just glad I didn't buy something expensive.</p>
