Expiry of Crystal Valley Custard?

Good day,

We used a new box of Crystal Valley vanilla flavoured custard to compliment our delicious apple crumble. Our guests were complaining that it tasted expired, but upon inspection the expiry date was the 6th September 2018. We tasted it for ourselves and it tasted very dusty and almost had a damp taste to it.

Needless to say Dessert was not a success for a group of first-time guests travelling as a group. This has affected their stay & we would like some explanation as to why it tasted expired well before the date.
