Breach of contract

In March 2020 I contracted with this individual to heighten my garage doors, re-position a garage window, install a drive through garage door to my backyard, build an undercover braai area, extend the existing roof over this area and pave the entire area. The quote was fairly substantial and the deposit equated to roughly 90% for all the work. Mr Kriek tore down the existing garage doors shortly prior to Lockdown, did not complete the job and emerged again about 2 weeks after they could work again. I could not use the garage and all attempts to get him to remove the rubble on the driveway failed. I had to do this myself. After 3 attempts to correct my now partially collapsed roof I had to get an engineer in and another contractor who finalised all the work recently. Kriek failed to reappear and made no contact until when suddenly I got an SMS saying he is broke and had to sell both his vehicles just to survive. I have since established that he has been advertising his business on Facebook and has secured contracts, I think, in the Bluff and Hillcrest areas but have not verified this information. I would just like to warn people NOT to do business with this individual - he has cost me a lot of money which the lawyers reckon will be chasing good money after bad if I lay a charge, I am considering to proceed in any event.
