Excessive liability expected from a client doing a test drive

I wanted to test drive a used Volvo XC60 yesterday, since I was really considering buying the car. The salesperson told me that I had to sign a liability form accepting to pay the first R17500.00 of the damage, should we be involved in an accident during the test drive. It is the first time that I have come accross such a high liability policyat any car dealership. She said that that is CMH's policy. I phoned the CMH Volvo branch at Silver Lakes thereafter, and they confirmed it. The salesperson said I must be grateful that they are honest, because other car dealers don't reveal this to a client prior to a test drive. Volvo South Africa lost a client for life.
