Terrible and disappointing experience overall
If I could, I would give this rooftop bar 0 stars. I'm not one to complain, but the experience here was shocking.
It was mine and my partner's 3 year anniversary, and I wanted to book a romantic dinner with ****tails on a rooftop bar in Cape Town. I did extensive research (or so I thought) and came to the conclusion that Cloud 9 was the best option based on images that I saw, as well as a few reviews about how great the view is. On their website it says, "Just the spot for some midweek fun to get you through to Friday. From 3 PM - 7 PM our famous ****tails are only R45 each, and it's a 2 for 1 on all local beers and ciders!" SO i booked for 18:30 to make it in time before Happy Hour ended. I also booked the rooftop bar, not the poolside area. You are given the option.
We arrived at 18:30 and no one was around to see us to our table. When I said I had a booking for 2 at 18:30, I was shown to the pool area to sit. We then waited 5-10min for a waiter who we showed via e-mail I had booked rooftop for 2. Not poolside couch. He then looks confused and we see him go upstairs to find us a table -they clearly hadn't even reserved one.
It's now 18:55 so we asked the waiter about Happy Hour and that we would like to order quickly because it's 5min to go. He had no idea about their Happy Hour and then looked at his watch and insinuated that it's too late to order if it ends at 19:00. We insisted and showed our watches that we are still eligible for the special. We place an order and he disappears to get our drinks. The food we ordered was tasty and the view was good (not the best in Cape Town, though). Also, the images are misleading about the space and setup of this rooftop bar. We sat at a cramped high table between two big party groups. Not romantic at all.
When the bill came, we were charged in full for those ****tails. When I queried this and said we ordered before 7pm, the waiter again looked confused and said he will check with someone downstairs. He comes back and says they've changed their Happy Hour to 4pm-6pm (what kind of Happy Hour time is that??). This isn't what the website says, and he didn't even know this when we explicitly ordered the ****tails on happy hour special. Nothing was done to remedy this from management we simply received a sheepish "sorry" from the waiter. Overall, dinner for 2 cost us R800, and wasn't worth a cent. I'm not sure how this rooftop bar makes the list of being a Top Rooftop Bar in Cape Town. I'm from CT and I've been to much better establishments than this. I thought trying somewhere new would be great, but I seriously regret my night out at Cloud 9. I would recommend patrons avoid this rooftop bar completely -Cape Town has SO much more to offer!
