Misleading Sales Tactics Resulting in Unauthorised Policy

About a month ago, I was approached by individuals representing Clientele Life at a shopping centre where they had set up a cubicle. They explained that Clientele was offering a voucher and discount programme and assured me that I would not become a Clientele customer.

During the interaction, the representatives requested my banking details. I questioned this multiple times and asked why this was necessary if I was not signing up for any financial product. I was told that the details were required to activate the vouchers. I was also assured that no money would be deducted from my account. Based on these assurances, I allowed the process to continue. At no point was it clearly explained that I was agreeing to a life insurance policy.

Approximately one month later, I noticed a debit order of around R400 from my account. When I contacted Clientele Life, I was informed that I had been signed up for a life insurance policy with cover of approximately R375,000.

The policy was never explained to me during the interaction at the shopping centre. I immediately cancelled the policy, which has now been processed. However, I was informed that I am not eligible for a refund, despite the fact that the policy appears to have been initiated through misleading information provided during the interaction.

I would appreciate it if Clientele Life could review this matter and reconsider refunding the amount deducted, given the circumstances under which the policy was initiated. I also encourage the company to review the practices used during these mall activations to ensure consumers are clearly informed when they are being signed up for financial products.
