Wouldnt let me buy item

I was at clicks gateway today during my lunch break. In the mothers day promotions section, there was a pink leather handbag with toiletry items in it. There were 3 on the shelf. The shelf had no indication of price and none of the bags had a bar code on them. I looked inside the bag as sometimes the tag is placed inside but no luck. I then approached 2 gentlemen who worked at the store; they were wearing the store uniform. I requested a bar code on the item since I wanted to purchase. After looking at each other in a "you do it- no you do it" fashion, one of them took the bag from me. He then proceeded to look for the bar code as I had already done. When he could not find one, he stated that the reason there was no bar code was that this was stock left over from christmas. I then said to him, "Ok, but I wish to purchase it now and it was on your shelves available for purchase. There are 3 of them."

He started mumbling in his own language. We spoke to the manager, who directed him to do 2 things "Speak to the guy in the back and look it up in the book". The manager then wandered off. We looked in the book and could not find the item. All the while, there was an air being put upon. As if I was an unruly customer for wanting to buy the item. He then proceeded to walk up and down and eventually disappeared. The overall feeling I received was, dont purchase this item.

So I didnt. I had already spent my entire lunch break on this and needed to get back to work. I was extremely unhappy with this level of service. Why would a store put items on there shelved that they do not intend to sell?
