Exploitation of the elderly

My mother joined Chubb security in March 2002 - and all was very easy, one phone call and an representative of the company came out to see her and had an agreement signed - Reference No. 022 - 445739.

In October, for a number of reasons, she decided to move to another security company and thus phoned Chubb on 12 October 2016 to cancel the 14 year old contract. She was told that she would be informed as soon as it was done.

On 1 November, as usual, Chubb debited her account again - when she enquired she was informed that this was due to the fact that she had to give a calender month's notice - thus fair to accept that no further monies would be due to Chubb.

Not so, on 1 December another payment went off from her account - this time, for the first time, she was told that she had to send them an e-mail to cancel the contract - this was not mentioned during any of the previous telephonic conversations .

My 89 year old mother had never had a computer in her life, has never worked on a computer and e-mails is a term which she has only heard of from much younger family members. When she tried to explain this fact to the consultant she was told that she will then have to come into Chubb's offices to cancel in person - and neither she, nor me, know where these offices are situated.

To me, this is a case of exploitation of a vunerable old lady and I will use every available means to fight this matter on her behalf as she is NOT in a position to do so.
