Negligence at Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital- ward 12
I would like to lay a formal complaint again Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital. My grandmother was in ward 12 for about 3 weeks and she developed a bed sore, we were only notified by the matron that she has a bed sore when she was discharged. How can you develop a bed sore in 3 weeks and not notify any of the family members?! The matron has not even gotten back to us regarding this matter. This is negligence!!!

10 Jun 2026, 10:18Good morning,
I trust that you are well.
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally lodge a complaint against Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital regarding the treatment and care my grandmother received while admitted to Ward 12.
My grandmother was admitted to the hospital for approximately three weeks. During this period, she developed a severe bed sore while under the care and supervision of the nursing staff and medical personnel. What is deeply concerning and unacceptable is that the family was never informed at any stage that her condition had deteriorated or that she had developed a bed sore.
We were only informed by the matron about the bed sore on the day of her discharge. This raises serious concerns regarding patient care, monitoring, communication, and overall negligence within the ward. Bed sores do not develop overnight, especially not to a concerning extent, without there being warning signs that should have been identified and addressed by medical staff. It is alarming that over the course of three weeks, no effort was made to notify the family, discuss treatment, or explain how this injury occurred.
Furthermore, after raising our concerns, the matron failed to follow up or provide feedback regarding the matter. The lack of accountability and communication from hospital management has added further distress and frustration to our family during an already difficult time.
We believe this situation constitutes negligence and a failure in the duty of care owed to patients. As a family, we entrusted the hospital with my grandmother’s well-being, only to discover she had suffered avoidable harm while admitted under professional care.
We therefore request the following:
- A full investigation into how my grandmother developed the bed sore while admitted in Ward 12.
- A detailed explanation regarding the treatment and monitoring procedures that were followed during her stay.
- An explanation as to why the family was not informed immediately once the bed sore was identified.
- Accountability from the staff responsible for her care.
- A formal written response addressing this complaint and the steps the hospital intends to take to prevent similar incidents from happening to other patients.
We expect this matter to be treated with the seriousness it deserves and request urgent feedback regarding the complaint.
Yours faithfully,
AU
