********* Managers

Last week Friday, November 25, 2016, my 62 year old mother and I stood outside in a long queue of the Checker Hyper in N1 City at 5h30 to get the best Black Friday specials on offer. Needless to say the store was packed with customers trying to purchase all sorts of sale items before the working day begins.

After filling our trolley with the groceries we required, we stood in the queue to checkout our groceries. The line ended right at the back of the store almost, just between the prepacked bakery goods, to checkout groceries. Now I understand that this was due to the Black Friday madness, and we all had to stand in line to pay our groceries, which I was perfectly fine with and so was my mother. While she was waiting in line, I ran to the bakery to get some pastries and upon returning, there was a white lady placed in front of the people in front of us.

My mother informed me that one of the managers at the store called Elton, placed this lady in the line without informing any of the other customers also queuing. I questioned the customer and she said that because she had an operation she could not stand in a long line. In that same breath, she was shopping alone and he trolley was packed full of heavy groceries…so wherever she had the operation, standing in line with the rest of us was really no big deal.

Aside from this, I called the information desk and asked them to call the store manager, Mr Van Heerden/Heerder to my aisle on several occasions, and he never pitched. I got to the front of the till and asked them to call him again, instead he blatantly ignored my request stating that the store was too busy. I spoke to the frontline manager and she spoke to him about the incident and he still refused to see me. Once I checked out my groceries, I gave the frontline manager my number and asked her to ask her manager to call me.

This all happened last week Friday, it has been a week later and I still have not received a call-back. Firstly, it was ********* of a manager, who was trained and is more experienced in customer service to just place someone in line without speaking to the customers first. My mother is 62 and diabetic and cannot go without food for long periods of time but she stood in the queue like everyone else did. In addition to this, she has osteoporosis, which means that she too cannot stand in the line for long but she did.

We were highly offended by the way the manager scoffed us off but could make the effort to assist a white lady. I do not know how else to see him other than ****** and ********* in this regard. I mean if he really wanted to assist this lady, he could have opened a new till for her or informed us of his intentions but then also accommodating those who are likely disabled to stand in a long line on a Black Friday.
