Price charged not the Price on the shelf

This morning I was at Checkers at Wingtip shopping center in Pretoria. I selected a tube of 50 Christmas baubles to purchase. The only price matching the product was the price label above the product, for 50 units in the container, and the label said R199.

On reaching the teller it scanned for R249.99. I informed the teller that the price on the shelf is R199. She sent the packer to check the shelf. The packer was also confused as the label for R199 was the only label matching the product on the shelf. She scanned all the other products on the shelf and none of them scanned for R199. She called a supervisor who told me the price on the shelf is incorrect and I can not pay R199. I informed him that I will gladly pay the price indicated on the shelf. He began to argue and called the gentleman who packed the shelf. The gentleman who packed the shelf was also confused and then realized he had put the incorrect label on the shelf. He then proceeded to place the new R249.99 label below the baubles I had selected. By this time a second supervisor had joined us. I again informed the first supervisor that he can not now put the new price there when that label was no where in that isle at the time I selected the product. He again said the man who packed the shelf didn't put the correct label on and that it was my problem, he would not sell the product for the price originally on the shelf. He then got up and walked away clicking his tongue without a word further. Another customer in the isle even commented on the unprofessionalism shown as the supervisors and packer walked away.

I am appalled at the lack of professionalism shown. I was at no point impolite to any staff member, but did say I would not be happy to pay any more than indicated on the shelf. To have a supervisor tell me that it is my problem that the gentleman who packed the shelf had placed the incorrect price on the shelf, and then walk away clicking his tongue is far from what any customer would expect.
