Leaving child by door

Went to Checkers Mall of the South to buy some items and afterwards I wanted to enter the Checkers Liquor store next to it, only to be told my 8month old can go in with me but my 4 year old needs to wait by the door. Are they nuts? Never have i heard about leaving children at a door at any store! Obviously i did not go in.
