Horrible service
Good day,
I'd like to bring to your attention one of the managers and one of the cashiers at your Somerset branch. Manager: Pieter Van Rooyen Cashier: Sibongisile (I could be wrong with the name/spelling) Date: 27 December 2022
According to my sister, Margie, when the cashier was asked where she should go to pay for the groceries, she answed rudely and without accurate direction. When I got to my sister and saw her looking for an aisle to unpack the groceries, she said the cashier isn't telling her where to go. At this moment I overheard the cashier rudely directing my sister to "take it out there", as she pointed to the aisle. I immediately took offense to her manner of address with my sister and asked her if she is upset at something. She ignored me. I then repeated the question and she, answered with rude irritation, "no, are you upset"? I rep****, "yes I am. You're speaking to us rudely. She then just kept quiet.
At this point I spoke to another staff member, asking for a manager. The cashier then called for him. As the manager approached where we stood, I explained the above story to him. His response was, "I'm sorry for that, I will talk to her, but you must understand, it's late and we've been working very hard. She has child like you do." Shocked at his response, I asked, "so because she has a child and works hard, we have to accept her rough rude way of speaking to customers?" At this point my wife chimed in and said, "Let's speak to another manager or his manager about this because he didn't see that when he was called, I saw him throw his hands in the air when he was called by the cashier. We already were a burden from the first moment." The manager got upset because his behavior was now exposed. He raised his voice and conceitedly gave us his name and told us to with an arrogant attitude that we can report him.
The manager displayed a groce lack of customer service. He justified the appalling service of of the cashier. He became abrupt and started raining his voice. In fact, when I asked to speak to a manager, he through his hands up in exasperation without even knowing why he was being called.
He said that staff has worked hard. He said his staff has children. Out of his own, he said that he knows that we pay his salary. Something we never hinted to. He displayed bold arrogance when we told him that we will take it further and report him. This is how we got to his name.
He displayed no skill is deescalating the frustration we felt. During the altercation I met him half way when he mentioned that it is past 21:00. I agreed with him and conceded that while that is so, a friendly reminder over the PA system urging us along would have been sufficient. Instead, the cashier was blatantly rude with customers and what compounded matters was his justification of her behavior.
Video analysis of the camera footage will show his first reaction upon being called to attend to the complaint.
I am from Johannesburg, we arrived at 20:forty something and our shopping spilled over because we had arrived from Johannesburg that day. Our vacation experience has partially been soured by Checkers Somerset management.
I'm sorry that I shopped there.
I hope that the necessary and unbiased steps will be taken to address the behavior of the staff at this establishment.
-A sorely disrespected customer.
