Checkers Plumstead Butchery Underweight Pork Roast... by a lot
I went to my local Checkers today (Checkers Plumstead ) on the 17-11-2019 to buy a piece of pork roast and use the special promotion of R20 off. I couldn't find any roasts on the shelves so went to talk to one of the butchers people, I had to wait 15mins before I was served as a lady before me was having trouble buying 2 steaks. I wasn't really listening to her conversation with the butcher person but did hear her say "why are the steaks getting more expensive when you trimmed them" she eventually left with her 2 steaks. I asked the butcher for about a R150 piece of pork roast as I wanted to use their special (R20 off if you spend R150 or more) so he cut me a piece and went to weigh it, I asked what the mass was, he said 2.95kg. I told him immediately that, that cant be right, the piece of pork looks like about 2.5kg, I asked him to weigh it on another scale. The mass on the second scale was 2.6kg, i asked him what the hell is going on, he said that that scale is broken,? so I told him to weigh it on their 3rd and last scale.. 2.7kg. I then asked all of them whats going on, you have 3 scales and they are all different, and not by a little, nearly 400g difference between the 3... the reaction I got was just a shoulder shrug.... really ? I told them I'm going to get a manager, got a Customer service lady , went back to butchery and explained it to her, the guy that was serving me (when he saw me coming back) raised his voice and said the 2.95kg scale is now fixed and is weighing the same as the 2.7kg scale but I told him he wanted to charge me the 2.95kg price , he said that doesnt matter and muttered something to the customer care lady, I later found out he told her there was never a difference in masses even though he admitted it to her when I stood there. I had enough of him and just walked out, I went to go speak to the customer care lady again and her response was " sorry for the inconvenience" thats it. Nevermind that half the meat being packed was being weighed on the scale that was way out and hence half the packed mince going to the shelves is underweight and overpriced, she had no interest in why 3 scales are out by 400g... just business as usual Is this really the way that is store is run...... and now I understand why the lady before me took so long, everytime they weighed her steaks they were getting different masses and now her comment about the trimmed steaks getting more expensive makes sense..... mind boggling. Suffice it to say I never had my Roast Pork shoulder today.
