Checkers Money Market Is Unreliable and Humiliating
Making use of the Checkers Money Market voucher system has been an inconvenient and humiliating experience for me as a customer.
In December 2025 at the Woodburn branch in Pietermaritzburg, the cashier did not know how to process my voucher. The queue was held up while she struggled repeatedly, and her attitude suggested I was the problem. A manager eventually processed the payment, but there was no accountability for the lack of training.
In January at Design Quarter in Johannesburg, I tried to activate my Money Market account. Neither the cashier nor the manager knew how to assist. Three staff members attempted to figure it out while I waited. The manager went to the office to call the Money Market hotline during mid afternoon working hours, but it was not answered despite multiple attempts. I later called myself and also received no response. I ultimately had to search online to complete the process. This is a system that does not support its customers or its staff.
This evening at Sandton City, I spent an hour and a half doing month end grocery shopping of about R3,000, intending to use the R2,100 remaining on my voucher and pay the balance by card. After repeated failed attempts at the till, a manager eventually discovered that the Money Market system was offline. I was the last customer in the store at closing time and had to leave a full trolley of groceries behind.
Across Pietermaritzburg, Fourways and Sandton, the pattern is consistent. Staff are not trained. Managers lack support. The system is unreliable. Customers are left embarrassed and inconvenienced.
If Checkers offers this service, it must ensure it works. I expect a clear response on how this will be fixed and how I can access my remaining funds without another failed transaction.
