Excellent Public Facility Service

I was diagnosed with cancer in June this year and my medical aid, which is Discovery Health refused to pay for my cancer treatment. I decided to go to Charlotte Maxeke JHB Academic Hospital. Without knowing, I went to the Radiation Department instead of Chemotherapy. I was given an appointment date which was about three weeks after. On the day of the appointment I went back to the hospital. I was attended to by a radiology specialist, she told me that I was supposed to have gone to the chemotherapy department, nonetheless, she picked up her phone and spoke to her colleague on the other side and she agreed to see me. When I got there, the clinic was packed already. I was very weak, I sat on the floor. Immediately when the sister in charge of the clinic saw me seated on the floor, she brought me a chair from her office and told me under no circumstances that a patient should sit on the floor. When the doctor finished with scheduled appointments for the day, she attended to me. She was very professional and explained everything that I needed to know as a patient about chemotherapy. She examined me and check all the results that I had had in the past. She then prescribed my chemotherapy. I could do it that day because it was already late. I went back to the hospital the following day and I was given my treatment. I have done three sessions and am left with three more. As medical aid members we turn to criticise government facilities and civil servants but so far I am very impressed with Charlotte Maxeke services. I feel guilty because I ended up adding to the already stretched services because I was failed by a private institution. Unfortunately these institutions only get positive feedback from the media as well as the society at large. One more aspect I want to mention about discovery is that most of the time there is a short fall that a patient must pay. At Charlotte Maxeke I only pay R 75.00 and I get my chemotherapy as well as medication on top to take home with
