R30,000 plus to repair one headlight on a BMW!

Very unsatisfactory service. Xenon headlight on my fabulous 2006 320d BMW started displaying intermittent problems in 2014. I tried two non-BMW service providers without success and finally decided to go to Cedar Isle Auto. R11,000 later (August 2016) the light was working and I had a 2 year warrantee. 10 months after that the problem was back and the car back to Cedar Isle. This time they wanted R25,000 - faulty parts were "different" from last time. Quote was declined and I decided to try a fix myself. Two hours on a Saturday morning and the problem was fixed - no parts needed. Not a perfect or permanent repair but at least I have got to the truth. Biggest problem was the headlight globe was not plugged in. Go figure that one!
I stop short of crying "attempted *******" but only just and definitely have the opinion that the service department is lazy and have a hap-hazard approach preferring to simply change parts at the customer's expense.
I am still looking for a good old fashioned mechanic with a passion for BMW's.

PS I wrote to the Dealer Principal, Erika Coetzer and copied BMW SA. Ms Coetzer did have the courtesy to respond quickly but rejected any wrong doing on behalf of the dealership - a common practice in this country it seems.

Dear Sir, as communicated to you we have investigated your concern based on limited service history that we have available for your vehicle. you told us that various service providers have attempted to resolve the intermittent headlight problem prior to bringing it to us for the first time in 2016.

In August 2016 we replaced the Footwell Module, 5 Taillight globes and a 1 Day-time running light globe. These globes are in no way connected to the Zenon headlight system.

In of this year you returned your vehicle to us for the Zenon light not working on the right side. When we diagnosed the problem we noticed that the clips meant to hold the globe were broken. We cannot order these clips separately and therefore quoted on a complete headlight.
We also identified that the Control unit needed replacement.

As discussed all BMW dealers offer a 2-year warranty on the parts fitted. From the above summary and part number comparison it is clear that we have not quoted you on the same parts that were fitted in 2016.

Since we have not been involved in your own repair, we cannot comment on it nor confirm that it will pass a quality check and that in the medium to long terms the problem is resolved.
