Extremely Disappointing Experience – Poor Communication & Service

I hosted a birthday lunch for 28 guests at Cattle Baron Constantia on Sunday, 11 May 2025, and unfortunately, the experience was incredibly disappointing from start to finish.

I made the reservation well over a month in advance and confirmed it twice—via phone and WhatsApp. On both occasions, I specifically asked if a deposit or any fees were required, and was clearly told no. Based on this, I sent out invitations and moved forward with planning.

A week after my second confirmation, I was suddenly informed that a set menu at a fixed price would apply—something that had never been mentioned before. I expressed my frustration, as this was unfair to communicate so late. After some back and forth, I was told we could order from the set menu but at standard menu prices. It wasn’t ideal, but I agreed.

Then came another surprise: I was told a deposit was required. Again, this completely contradicted the previous confirmations. Reluctantly, I paid—being told it would be deducted from the final bill. At no point was I informed it could be withheld or forfeited.

On the day of the lunch, things got even worse. We were given standard menus and started ordering, only to be told halfway through that this was a mistake and we had to use the (very limited) set menu instead.

During the meal, a staff member informed me that because a few guests didn’t show up—something out of my control—the restaurant would be keeping my deposit. This had never been communicated beforehand. After more back and forth, they eventually said they’d only refund 50% of it. By that point, the event was already spoiled, and I just wanted it to be over. I then later checked the receipt , and although we eventually agreed on 50% of the deposit , they in fact kept the entire deposit.

The entire experience was disorganised, unprofessional, and frankly embarrassing. What should have been a joyful celebration turned into a stressful and frustrating ordeal.

This was my second visit to Cattle Baron Constantia, and it will be my last. I will not be recommending this venue to anyone.
