Pawned items disappears when Grey Owl Cash Converters closes its doors
After a lengthy discussion with Rachel at their head office on Friday 31 May 2019, I was left under the impression that Franchisees can treat their clients any way they wish. She had promised to send me the details of the owner of the Grey Owl branch in Centurion, and until today has failed to do so.
A contract was signed between my husband, Donovan Talbot and Grey Owl Cash Converters, in which it stated he would pay an amount of interest at month end each month towards items pawned at the branch. Please note these items are very valuable and some irreplaceable. Said items have been in the care of the branch for a considerable period of time as we have not had the financial means to collect them as yet.
Two weeks ago my husband noticed the branch had closed down and a number had been left in the window of an unnamed person, whom one could contact regarding items left in the care of said branch. This number is ********** . I called this number on the 22nd of May 2019 and the male who answered assured me the items were safe in storage at Forest Hill and that my husband could contact him regarding his payment. It was not disclosed that the full amount would have to be paid now. Also, no where in the contract does it stipulate the course of action to follow should the store close down. Not once has this store contacted us to inform us of their closing or where the items are being kept. One is left to think that due to the lack of information or communication the goods are ******, and that the store has committed ********** business.
We would like to ask Head Office to please supply us the details of the owner and how to contact this person to discuss their breach of contract and how the matter can be resolved. The contract does not state that the goods would ever leave the premises, especially without our permission. The contract was signed at the address of Grey Owl Village, but now seems nil-and-void.
The gentleman was not interested in receiving the monthly interest when my husband contacted him on 30 May 2019 as per the contract, and continuously hangs up when my husband tries to speak to him. Should this not be resolved in 48 hours we will have to open a case of ***** / theft and contact an attorney to start legal proceedings. I am placing this complaint here on Hello Peter and every social media platform I deem fit to warn customers of the dangers of pawning items at a Cash Converters holds. The contract one signs clearly doesn't protect the Cash Converter client.

He has further informed my husband that the goods were handed to another Pawn shop owner (I have no details of this person) at the end of last month. Which makes one wonder when calling the number they left on the door at Grey Owl, the person we both spoke to said he was in possession of the goods, that they were in storage and insured at Forest Hill, and could meet either one of us if we brought the full amount owing. How could he make such an arrangement if neither he or Neil had the items?
My husband has since contacted this new owner. Please note we did NOT give our permission for our valuable items to be sold / handed over to a third party. This lady has a pile of people's possessions in her offices and cannot even locate our goods. After a lengthy search one of her employees found one of our items but is yet to find the other. To make matters worse she has added her own mark-up on the items - ****************! How is any of this legal??
I will never recommend the use of Cash Converters Pawn division - this is quite unpleasant. And no one seems interested to assist us.
