ID NUMBER REQUIRED TO MAKE A DEBIT CARD PAYMENT?

<p>On 7 June 2016, I bought a hockey bag, R39,00, from Cash Converters, Sanlam Centre, Parow. On payment with my debit card, I was asked for my ID number. I was reluctand to give it and questioned the need for them to put it on their computer system. It was not an expensive item which carried a guarantee. If I make a cash payment, then they don't need my ID number. Only debit card payments. What is the difference? If there is no money in my account, the transaction will not be approved.</p> <p>The manager told me that their system is designed that way in order for the transaction to be processed. That they sold second hand goods and if you pay with a debit card, you ID number is required. </p> <p>By law, when they buy second hands goods from the public, you need to produce you ID and they record it. But when you want to make a debit card payment it must still be recorded?</p> <p>I have shopped and made many debit card payments at other Cash Converters and second hand stores and never was I asked for my ID number. I asked Cash Converters, Brackenfell why the need for the ID number to be recorded on their computer system and the were puzzled. To them, it did not make sense either. </p> <p>Thank you.</p> <p> </p>
