Disappointed on their judging of items/Unjust treatment

I recently saw an ad for Cash Converters, saying they buy unwanted goods for cash. As a business owner myself, I don't regularly have the time to pursue selling an item on the classifieds, so I decided to take them up on their offer and clean some clutter in my home. I am also in fact a regular customer at this store, and I have a good relationship with the sales staff.

I decided to bring in my Guitar Hero set to see what I could get for it. This story isn't about the money or value of that item, in fact in my books the guitar hero set has depreciated to R1 for me after using it just a few times in my school years! This is about the principle of treating customers fairly and doing the same when valuing their items.

Now my Guitar Hero set was complete, and in quite good condition, since I hardly used it. Anyways, Mr "J" at the valuation counter was taking a look at it. He pointed out that the cables connecting the top drums were brittle and broken. They weren't broken, but they were brittle, I agree, but this was a manufacturing issue. And they were still intact. He then said that they couldn't take the set because of the brittle cables and they have to offer a 6 month warranty (as per CPA guidelines) on all products they sell.

I then just walked around the store for a bit doing my usual rounds, and then found another Guitar Hero Drum set in the store. And guess what, ironically the one in store also had brittle auxil****y cables, but the cable on the top right drum was completely broken! Yet they accepted the item from the previous owner. Now I really felt like they were really making me feel like some kind of clown or fool. I pointed this out to "Mr J" but he gave the excuse that "this must have just happned recently" and "it was fine before".

I asked him then, why not take in my drums? They are perfect, the cables are intact... and he still refused. No idea why. I asked both him and another lady in management at the back and asked, "So this whole set is absolutely broken and useless now, right?" and when asked what I should do with it, she shockingly said to me, "throw it away!" You can imagine how I felt after that. I just took my set back with me and left immediately.

Now I know it is obviously part of their business model to try and devalue your item as much as they can, but this perfectly understandable because they do need to make a profit and it is technically the pawn industry. My sale wasn't even a "desperate sale" like how some people pawn their stuff. Were they just rejecting my item because they didn't want to give me a higher price as goes with "old goods" rather than "desperate sale"? What if I walked in tomorrow and said I needed to pawn that exact item, would they take it in? What if someone else walked in with a similar set and did the same? I don't get it.

I'm not looking to get anything out of this. As mentioned I could sell the Guitar Hero for R1 at this point if I wanted to, or even throw it away. But it is the principle. That some staff clearly make loyal customers into fools and clowns here, or make excuses to give you devalued desperate sale prices for items that you just want to clear as junk. I doubt I'm going to visit this store much in the future, it has sadly deteriorated since it was the grand store when it opened over a year ago, and the stock for sale isn't even that good either. Meh, good luck CC Gift Acres, and I hope in the future you improve on your "buying department", treating customers nicely while still making a profit, not one-sided like it is now.

PS It's a second hand shop. You can't expect everything you buy (from the store perspective) from customers to be brand spanking new. And my stuff was in very good condition anyways. And yet you accepted an identical good before that was broken yet you didn't want to take mine in? And your advertising campaign needs to change, because clearly you don't buy in old junk goods, you're too focused on buying from those desperate pawners all the time. Yeah, good luck with business...

Good day

Thank you for taking the time to post this on Hellopeter. The experience you had really was unfortunate as our business model states we do all the business all the time. I'm really quite disappointed reading this.

I am going to refer this to the store owner and the regional operations manager. They will contact you shortly.

Regards
