cancellation of my contract

I joined n signed a contract with carlton gym however due to unforseen issues,I had to cancel my contract.I have never been inside the gym at all.I didn't even pay the joining fee nw they are telling me I must pay R350 cancellation fee.I cancelled my contract within 7 days and they insist I pay that R350.pls advice
