****** Manager

My boyfiend and I make a point of visiting the Cape Union Mart in the Waterfront Mall whenever we are in Bloemfontein. As a mixed race couple we are used to a certain amount of stares whenever we walk around in public. Last week we had occasion to visit Cape Union and was aghast at what we found there.

The womoan behind the counter, who i later found out was the manager, made remarks to another staff member about us, I could not hear clearly what she was saying, but she was pointing in our direction with her head and making comments. As I said we are quite used to this behaviour from people in general. The thing that got me hot under the collar is that she reffers to her black/coulered staff members as SMURFS, from the way she speaks to them it is clear that the smurf word is used in place of the usual derogatory k word. This makes me wonder whether the staff keeps quiet because they need the work or whether top management ignores the problem, because they don't see it as one.

I, HOWEVER WILL NOT BE BACK THERE AGAIN.

Willem Vermeulen
