No gift returns accepted

I received a gift which was an item from Cape Union Mart (branded by them, only sold by them) - item brand new, unused and unopened). The gift was unwanted, so I wanted to return it to Cape Union Mart where I would have used the credit to purchase items to a higher value. I had just done the same thing at Clicks and Woolworths without a till slip (other gifts). However Cape Union Mart (the Cavendish branch) would not take the item back - their policy is that the item can only be returned with the original receipt. It surprises me that a retailer of this size does no operate competitively with similar businesses, by offering the same services. The upshot is that now I have something to the value of R400 that I will not use, and will likely throw or give away, and I will not be spending any additional money at Cape Union Mart.
