The pursuit of mediocrity

As a parent of a student who has been enrolled at Cambrilearn for the past four years, I would like to share both my appreciation and concerns regarding my child's experience at the school. While there have been many aspects of the program that we initially valued, over time, we have observed some significant changes that have left us uncertain about whether the program continues to align with my son's academic needs and future goals.

Positives:

Personalized Learning Environment: Cambrilearn provided my son with a flexible learning environment, which was one of the main reasons we chose the school. The ability to learn at his own pace was valuable in the earlier years. However, over the years, we have noticed several challenges that led us to decide to enroll my son in another institution:

Challenges:

Shift in Educational Focus: What initially felt like a deep focus on the "why" behind learning has gradually shifted to a more procedural focus on the "how." This change has affected my son's engagement with his studies and his overall enthusiasm for learning. We believe that a deeper connection to the purpose of his education is essential for maintaining his motivation.

Critical Skills Training: There appears to be a limited emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are fundamental for academic and personal growth. These are the areas where my son particularly excels and has a strong interest, and we feel that more attention could be given to nurturing these abilities.

Inconsistent Academic Standards: We've encountered issues with incorrect marking and grammatical errors in assignments and tests, which not only impact my son's academic record but also contribute to confusion and frustration. This lack of attention to detail has raised concerns about the accuracy and quality of feedback.

Communication Challenges: We've experienced difficulty establishing meaningful conversations with the Heads of Department regarding my son’s progress and concerns. As parents, it’s essential to feel that there is an open and responsive line of communication to discuss academic issues and tailor the learning experience to my son's needs.

Limited Curriculum Offerings: While the core subjects are covered, we have noticed a lack of enrichment programs in areas such as coding, robotics, history, literature, and the arts. These are areas that my son is deeply passionate about, and we believe that a well-rounded curriculum that includes these subjects is essential for fostering his creativity and critical thinking.

Motivation and Feedback: One of the most important aspects of education is the ability to receive constructive feedback that encourages growth. Unfortunately, we have found that my son's learning experience has lacked the motivation and feedback needed to help him continuously improve. For instance, after achieving an impressive 95% average in his subjects, my son was not even offered a simple "well done." This lack of recognition has been disappointing, as it failed to motivate him or acknowledge his hard work. How can a student feel encouraged to keep striving when their efforts are not acknowledged?

Issues with Learning Materials: There have been several instances where incorrect lessons or materials were uploaded, which has led to confusion and disruption in my son’s learning process. Such inconsistencies undermine the overall effectiveness of the program.

Unfulfilled Promise: A specific disappointment has been the lack of follow-through on a promise made to my son. He was promised a certificate recognizing his initiative in environmental consciousness, specifically for his efforts to reduce paper wastage by proposing digitized learning materials. Unfortunately, this certificate has never been provided, which has left my son feeling let down. His commitment to sustainability and environmental issues was something he was very proud of, and the lack of acknowledgment of his efforts has been discouraging for him.

Teacher Workload and Lack of Development: It seems that many of the teachers are overworked, which likely contributes to the inconsistencies we have observed in the academic program. There is a sense of arrogance in some of the interactions, with little room for open feedback or discussion on how to improve the learning experience. Additionally, there appears to be a lack of development in their teaching methods and approaches. In today’s digital world, things are constantly changing, and even schools need to adapt to these changes in both technology and pedagogy. Unfortunately, it seems that some teachers have not kept up with these changes, which has impacted the overall quality of my son's education.

Conclusion:

After much consideration, we have decided to enroll my son in another institution that we believe will better meet his academic and personal needs. This decision was not made lightly, but it is driven by our desire to ensure that my son receives the best educational experience possible—one that aligns with his passions, challenges him to grow, and motivates him to reach his full potential.

We remain grateful for the efforts of the teachers who have supported my son during his time at Cambrilearn. However, given the challenges we’ve encountered, we feel that it is time for a change.
