Shower glass exploding in my hands

We have bought a new shower. The shower frame was already mounted to the wall. As I took the first glass panel, it exploded in my hands, almost in my face in million pieces. I do have a lot of scratches on my arms and had glass pieces that was actually stuck into my skin. When I contacted the manager of the above branch he told me I must go the the doctor, they will pay the expenses afterwards, but I phoned him back and ask how long will it take to receive my money back, as I am unemployed and obviously have no medical aid. I am living with my parents in law which are both pensioners and do not have spare money , He then got annoyed with me and said that it is normal for glass to shatter with a bump or two. Now I want to know how can they sell such type of glass especially for a shower? I could have lost my sight all because of this and what if my child was busy showering and it exploded then?
