Manager on duty,bad customer service

I wanted to return a product that had a year warranty. I bought the product in February this year and had all the boxes and slips but the manager (who was not interested in good customer service at all) said that they will not refund/return this product as they have discontinued it and first need to speak to their supplier. I am very upset as I feel that the relationship with Builders and their suppliers has got nothing to do with me, I am a customer of builders and feel that they needed to refund the product as I bought it from them and then claim/send it it back to their supplier. Now their problem with the supplier is mine and I am stuck with a product that is faulty!!! This is not the first time I had problems with return products and therefor will never buy anything from builders again, I will rather go to a place where I have comfort in receiving good customer service AND good after sale customer service.
