Budget Rent A Car South Africa – Unfair Handling of Third-Party Claims & Immediate Charges
I recently rented a vehicle from Budget Rent A Car South Africa (Rental Agreement No. E***) and was disappointed by how they handled an accident that was not my fault.
While driving a rental vehicle covered by Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Loss Waiver (TLW), I was rear-ended while stationary at a stop sign. Despite providing Budget with the details of the at-fault third-party driver, they immediately charged my credit card R19,330.19 for damages, before attempting to recover the costs from the at-fault driver’s insurer.
Major Issues with Budget’s Service:
❌ Charged me before recovering costs from the at-fault third party – Instead of billing the responsible party’s insurer first, Budget took the money from my account and said they “may” refund me later if recovery is successful. ❌ Contradictory emails about charges – One email stated my credit card was billed, another claimed it was just an authorization hold, yet my invoice shows a full deduction of R22,903.38. ❌ Lack of transparency in third-party claim handling – Despite multiple requests, Budget has not provided a clear timeline for reimbur*****t or proof that they have pursued the third-party claim. ❌ Rental agreement does not explicitly state they can charge first and refund later – My rental terms confirm I am responsible for an excess of R25,200, but nowhere does it say that Budget can deduct money before exhausting recovery efforts against a third party.
What Budget Should Have Done Instead:
✔ Waited for the third-party insurance claim settlement before taking money from my account. ✔ Provided a clear breakdown of costs and insurance handling. ✔ Given a firm timeline on when refunds will be processed.
I strongly advise future customers to be extremely cautious when renting from Budget South Africa, especially regarding their damage and claims process. If you ever get into an accident—even one that’s not your fault—they may charge you first and leave you waiting indefinitely for a refund.
I am now forced to dispute the charge with my credit card provider and escalate this matter further. I hope Budget takes accountability and revises their claims policies to be more transparent and fair to customers. 🚨 Potential renters, take caution! 🚨
