Misrepresentation of Insurance Cover

I am writing to formally express my extreme disappointment and dissatisfaction with the service I received from Budget Insurance and to request the immediate cancellation of my insurance policy. My experience has left me with serious concerns about how the policy was sold to me. I feel that the focus of the sales process was primarily on securing the sale, rather than ensuring that I fully understood the terms and conditions, benefits, limitations, excesses, exclusions, and potential claim payout associated with the policy. When the policy was sold to me, I was not given a clear and comprehensive explanation of what I could realistically expect should I be involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. As a customer, I re**** on the information provided by your sales representative when deciding to take out the policy and continued paying my premiums on that basis. However, after recently having my policy reviewed by a person with experience in the insurance industry, I was made aware of important aspects of my cover that I had not understood when the policy was sold to me. I was particularly concerned to learn that, based on my current understanding of the policy, a claim following a serious accident could result in a payout of approximately R33,000, which is substantially different from what I believed my level of cover would provide. This has left me feeling that I have been paying premiums for cover that does not adequately meet my needs and does not provide the protection I believed I had purchased. I find this extremely concerning. Insurance is a product that customers purchase specifically for financial protection during unexpected and potentially devastating circumstances. It is therefore unacceptable, in my view, for a customer to discover only after having the policy independently reviewed that the actual level of protection may be significantly different from what they understood at the point of sale. I feel that I was misled by the sales process, whether intentionally or through inadequate explanation of the policy. The responsibility should not be placed entirely on the customer to understand complex insurance terminology and claim conditions without those matters being properly explained by the person selling the policy. Had I been involved in a serious accident while believing that I had adequate insurance protection, I could have been left in an extremely vulnerable financial position. That possibility is deeply disturbing to me. I therefore request the following: 1. Immediate cancellation of my Budget Insurance policy, subject to the applicable cancellation terms. 2. Written confirmation of the cancellation and the effective cancellation date. 3. A full explanation of the cover that was actually provided under my policy. 4. A detailed explanation of how the potential R33,000 payout was determined, including all applicable limitations, exclusions and conditions. 5. A review of the original sales process and the information provided to me when the policy was taken out. 6. Confirmation of whether the sales representative properly explained the potential claim payout and limitations of my cover. 7. A complete breakdown of the premiums I have paid and the cover that those premiums provided. 8. A written response addressing my concerns regarding the adequacy and representation of the policy. I want to make it clear that this complaint is not simply about cancelling an insurance policy. It is about the trust placed in an insurance provider when a customer agrees to pay monthly premiums in exchange for financial protection. I expected Budget Insurance to provide transparent and accurate information so that I could make an informed decision about whether the policy was appropriate for my circumstances. Unfortunately, based on what I have subsequently learned, I do not believe that happened. I am extremely disappointed that I now feel as though I was sold an empty promise of protection, only to discover that the actual level of cover may be substantially less than I understood. I expect this complaint to be treated seriously and escalated to the appropriate complaints team for investigation. Please provide me with a written response addressing each of the concerns raised above, together with confirmation that my cancellation request has been actioned. I reserve my rights to escalate this matter to the appropriate insurance regulatory and dispute-resolution authorities should I remain dissatisfied with Budget Insurance’s response. I look forward to receiving your written response.
