Diamonds keep falling off ring

I bought a wedding ring for my wife from Browns four year ago. The ring has a big diamond between two smaller ones (trinity series). About a year ago, my wife noticed that one of the small diamonds fell out. We paid more than R1000 to replace the diamond, and for the ring to be "serviced". Less than six months later, the big diamond fell out. We asked for an assessment, and the report came back that the ring was "hard worn", and that the diamond can be replaced for little below R6000. Since my wife is a musician, it is difficult to understand how the ring could be "hard worn". When I told this to my family, my sister-in-law said that the same thing happened with a Tanzanite ring she bought from Browns. Based on my experience, and many other negative reviews on this site, I would recommend anyone to stay far away from Browns.

Good Afternoon Mr. Olivier

Thank you very much for taking the time to highlight this matter and allowing us the opportunity to give you feedback.

I have investigated this matter and have found the following facts relating to your Trilogy ring:

The ring was purchased from us on 14 December 2013 and was returned to us on 24 June 2017. A side diamond was missing. You accepted our quotation and instructed us to proceed with replacing the diamond. You again returned the ring to us on 11 December 2017. This time the centre diamond was missing. The ring was sent to our workshop and was inspected and assessed by our master goldsmith. During this assessment it was noted that the ring showed significant scratches and dents to the surface of the metal. Most significantly we also found that one of the claws holding the centre diamond had been completely broken off. It should be noted that whilst gold is a durable precious metal it is malleable which means that if it is accidentally banged against a hard surface it could become damaged or even break as was the case in this instance where a claw was broken. The damage was captured on high resolution images that were then forwarded to you. Along with the images we included our findings as well as the conclusion we had reached - that the loss of the centre diamond occurred as a result of the damage the ring had sustained. We included a quotation to replace the diamond with one of similar quality, repair the damaged claw and polish the surface of the ring in order to restore it to a wearable condition. You indicated that you would prefer that we return the ring back to you without carrying out any repairs to the piece.

If you would like to accept the quotation and proceed with the repair please don’t hesitate to contact us at your convenience.

Kind Regards

Laurence Vosloo
