Diamond fell out 4 months after purchase
My husband bought my engagement ring from the Canal Walk branch in early March 2021. We got engaged on a Sunday, but as the ring was too big, we took it back the next day to be resized. The ring was then sent to the workshop in Joburg and only returned a month later. This was already an unpleasant experience as it is such a big moment in our lives, but we had to to wait to celebrate with our family and friends as we didn’t have the ring. In July 2021 the diamond fell out at home after only 4 months since purchased. I couldn't understand how this had happened and something felt "off". The ring was assessed by another Jeweller who advised that there were 2 fundamental issues with the ring. Firstly, the diamond was too big for the setting and secondly, as a result, the claws were thinned out to force the diamond to fit. This meant that the diamond was never secure in its setting and it was a matter of time before this it would have fallen out. We relayed the information to the Branch who basically stonewalled us, threatened us with the Consumer Protector Act, advised that we voided the warranty as no one was supposed to look at the ring, etc. They were not helpful at all and it became apparent very quickly that that there was no client service. The ring was given back and we demanded a refund. The Jeweller at the store admitted that the ring was made correctly and was not up to standard. As we had the diamond, Browns offered to repair the ring, but as we told them it couldn't be, we were then offered a replacement ring. By this time I have seen almost 80 reviews on Hello Peter of similar instances and I didn't feel comfortable with a ring from Browns anymore. Our interactions with the Canal Walk Branch was horrific with staff being outright rude, putting the phone down in your ear, when requesting proof that the ring is in their possession for insurance purposes (some reviews said the rings just got lost in Joburg), we received documents with the wrong information on. I eventually called their Head Office and luckily got through to someone helpful. He again offered to replace the ring, but after explaining what had transpired with the Canal Walk branch and that the trust relationship with Browns was broken beyond reconciliation, he assisted to have us refunded. An engagement ring is meant to last for years and is meant to be worn everyday. You shouldn't be advised to only put on your ring after getting dressed or left in a drawer when leaving for your office job. Browns have ruined what was meant to be such a happy and special time for us, but only left me heartbroken and in tears and just shattered any emotions that was attached to such a sentimental item. I have since had another ring made from a local Jeweller that is absolutely stunning and hadn't any problems since. I can wear go about everyday life with confidence that I won't look down again and see the diamond missing.
