Health hazard kettle

My kettle is flaking off plastic dust, worst part is, I only saw it today and I don't know how long it's been doing it for. Can this make me sick, I don't know. But surely you guys test the plastics you use before making products. It's literally gone brittle and flaking off into my water :(
