Generator next to our bedroom window

I would like to know. How far away do the generator need to stand from the nearst house in the neighborhood? We live next to a BP garage and the generator is next to our bedroom window by the wall. Our power was off from 4pm right trough the night. The sound decibell is so loud we could not sleep. My dogs were hesterical and got anxiety attack, their hears could not take the high decidel sound from the generator. No sleep, migraine and hears are pumping of soarness.
