Company response to goods damaged in transit - not their problem....

I ordered and paid for a Glenfiddich 12 year bottle of whiskey in a canister as a gift for my son. When I opened the box, the canister was badly bent at the bottom. I sent an email to Bottleshop to inform them of the damage and enquired what they will do to resolve it. I received a one-liner from them:

"Thank you for your email. This has been damaged during transit. All our items are checked and securely packed before dispatching."

No offer to compensate or replace the bent canister. I believe it is their responsibility to choose a courier company that will ensure that their customers' goods (which was not cheap) are delivered in good order, and to take it up with the courier company or claim it from their insurance.
