Second Hand parts sold as new

I bought 3 items from The Bot Shop in Pretoria using their Online store and opted to pick up in store. The items I got was 2x lm386 3w amps and 1x TDA 7927 amp kit. The 2x lm386 amps works as I intended to use them as a pre amp for my Turntable with a few modifications. Usually I would build these myself but opted for the easier option. The TDA 7297 kit however not the same. It is a very basic little kit for the DIY guy to assemble. Upon unpacking the kit I discovered that the legs on the IC was bent badly and there was solder on it already as if soldered before. The backplate of the IC had clear marks on it as if it was mounted before. It was a second hand IC. My first thoughts were that I should have checked the product in store before leaving but obviously did not do so. I assembled the kit and found that one channel on this little stereo amp was dead. I rep**** to the email that was used to send my invoice, ***, and informed them of this. I did not expect anything other than some form of acknowledgement that my email was received. In this email I suggested they tell their customers to check items before taking receipt. a week later I received an email asking to review my purchase. Which I did. The lm386 got 5 stars. The TDA7297 got 1 star with a wroteup of what I found. Moments later I received an email from Judge.me, the email address ***. It was an automated response to.my 1 star review and I confirmed it. I was then contacted by Charity from The Bot Shop, ***. She wrote in her email that they will check the product from now and included that it is at it is received from their supplier. That was all fine at this point. What did however happen next was that my review was removed from their website. Apparently this is done by Judge.me. Charity then offered to refund me my R50 odd for the kit and asked for my banking detail. I sent it on. Charity then wrote that it has been forwarded to their accounts department. Generally not pedantic about these things but they still have not refunded the R50 odd as was offered by Charity. And that is the problem. If they can not keep their word on the small things then they will not be able to do so on the big things.

Hello Pieter. Yes, the incident report ended up on my desk too. We took it very seriously. We found another pack like that and are grateful for your feedback. The supplier also investigating to ensure this doesn't happen again on their side. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. As you noted, our support team immediately phoned you to find out what the issue was when we received the one star review. We have a four member support team that takes all customer support and product questions quickly and handle them instantly where possible, including product suggestions and general product help.

The refund was done earlier this week for you, and we also told you to keep the parts in case you can use them again in future projects. If you can have a look at your bank statement, please? R50.00 is easy to miss. and small payments usually do not come through as notifications on your phone. One of our support team will phone you today, if you can in the meantime just check your bank statement.

Best regards.

I contacted my bank and they confirmed a payment was made on 22 Feb. So that much is true. You mention an immediate response, which is not true. I emailed your sales email on the 3 February and got no response to this day. It was only once I left my review on your website that I got a response the next day 8 February from Charity. Beyond that my review was removed from your site. I tried leaving a review again so that people can be aware of this particular problem, you mentioned you foumd another kit as such, but my review was not permitted. That is a bit of a double standard. Also 5 days is not an immediate response.

Hello Pieter.

We are still sorry about the used IC in your package. We, of course, do not sell secondhand ICs as new; they are like R5 each, and there is no reason we would do such a thing - saving R5 in exchange for our reputation makes no sense. I will admit that many of us are a bit crazy electronic developers but not that crazy, man:-) We tinker, break things, and do all kinds of crazy projects, but when it comes to our customers and their experience, we are serious.   We do not operate like that. It must have happened at the supplier, where some $#@#$!@ slipped that IC into a package while doing the kitting.  I think the supplier's ears are still ringing after my call to them :-)

I am glad your refund is in your bank. You know, most companies would have expected you to return the product for inspection before they would refund you. We didn't do that. We apologised profusely and refunded. Our returns are very low, and the type of customers we usually attract will not take chances, so we either replace (shipping on us) or refund - the customer can choose what will make his or her boat float. Jip, that is how we roll.

The refund was paid later than usual for sure, but I can promise you this, no R50 note will ever, ever, ever come between our customers and us and our reputation. Never ever. Credit card transactions are easy and quick to refund, usually 2 working days. An EFT needs to be processed through our bank account, which takes a higher up the ranks person to do. That person, though, is me :-(  I missed last week's payment to you because of my own doing and only did it this week. It was not intentional, and for that, I also apologise.

We indeed received your email to sales. Emails to sales do not automatically trigger our support software because we seldom receive support-related questions on that email address. Below is the email we received:

" Thank you for the invoice. However the TDA 7297 IC is a second hand one and one of the 224 caps is nowhere in range when measured. The TDA had solder on it and you could clearly see a ***** mark as if it was mounted to a heatsink before. Some of the pins (legs) on the TDA were severly deformed and I had to use an NT blade to get them apart and aligned to fit.  I installed it anyway and found low voltage on the right channel out. Also the right channel input measures open circuit. Clearly the TDA is faulty. I should have checked before leaving the store. I will get a new TDA and 224 next week. Please do remind your customers to check items before leaving the store. "
That was a very polite email, thanks. Maybe a bit too polite :-). You should have started with "You &%$$#@! sell second-hand products as new" That would have made us sit up straight and respond very quickly :-) Very much like the subject of this Hello Peter review. We really do not like it when a customer is unhappy because of what we do. We try our utmost to give each person a great experience with Bot Shop. Sometimes we fail, but we make up in abundance if allowed.

We have been gullible with your email and did not take much notice of it. Bear with me if you will.  Our understanding from your email was that you would come in the following week to get a replacement for the used parts, and we thought we would pick up the conversation then. In hind site now, Charity should have maybe said, "Sorry Pieter, we will sort you out next week when you come in".  We did not want to get your blood boiling. We really thought we could handle this whole thing when you came in.  And while I talk about your email, customers should not have to check their packages first. It would be unreasonable for us to expect that especially the kits, it consists of many small parts. The sales staff checks the number of products in front of a customer but does not open kits and check every single small component. We do not expect customers to do that either.

BUT then you gave the product a one-star review on our site, all hell broke loose here at Bot Shop. A one-star review is like kryptonite to Superman, it gets pulled into our support system with red flags. When I said in the previous response we immediately reacted, I talked about this specific incident.  Jan called you immediately to find out the problem and how we could fix it.  It's great support, man.  After you explained, he realised there were only two options, a replacement or a refund. You opted for a refund. No problem. You do not have to send the item back either. A refund is given just like that.

We then thought all was handled and moved on to try and impress a couple of customers with advice on our products and their projects. We did not publish your review (it was never on the site, so it was not taken down). We figured you were all happy and realised that it is not that it is a bad product but that some person put a used IC in the mix. It was a human error, not a product error.

The thing is, we can convert 95% of bad reviews by having a chat with the customer by providing advice, instructions and just some general help. As I write this I start to think I am assuming too much, we all know what the mother of assumption is.

We thought all was handled, but again we seem to have been mistaken. Yesterday we had another 1-star review from you. All hell broke loose once again, and we tried calling you. We tried again this morning. I can only assume that you were still too angry to speak with us about that late refund or that your review was not published. We also wanted to determine what values you are getting from the capacitors. They are smoothing caps, right?

Looks like you are now sorted with the refund. What is left then is the unpublished review.

I have published it now, but I wish you had opted for a replacement to see how great these little boards are. They are awesome. One kitting guy throwing in a used component in a package should not be able to make the whole product bad, it seems that it does though. There are many that could get lots of coolness and happiness out of these units. They are great educational boards, especially for kits.

Anyhow, I hope you are now satisfied that your complaints are now heard and handled to your liking. Again, we are sorry about your experience with Bot Shop. Our intention is for customers to have a great time building all kinds of awesome things.

Best regards

Well worded response. Thank you. I did mention that I am generally not pedantic about these things and I am sure the TDA is a nice kit in most cases and have replaced many other variants of the TDA for some of my customers. I did opt to get an STK kit elswhere. Which is working well.
I do work with people one on one and I can tell you I do get 0 star ratings from some of them sometimes. It is impossible to keep everyone happy. I honestly thought you were trying to hide something. It is apparent that you are not. Well Done and thank you again.

Pieter, thank you for your reply.

I am super happy that we could resolve all for you. These days customers have little choice but to be worried about businesses as the amount of bad service seems to increase by the day. I totally understand your concern, especially on a used IC that is so obvious and easy to see by whoever packed that. But once packed in a kit, it can be easily missed when it is between all the other components by us here at Bot Shop. My mouth hung open the first time I read the incident report. The guy that did the kitting at the supplier just did not care, there is no excuse.

Keeping us on our toes is not a bad thing :-)

But at least all is sorted and I wish you a great evening.

Sincerely,

Kin

CEO Bot Shop.
