Bosun's Pub is just not what it used to be

It's my son's birthday today. He chose his favourite place to habe a celebratory lunch. Bosun's has been our local for nearly 18 years now and we frequent it regularly. Over all these years, we never had any cause for complaint. They understood that their business was a pub and that as people like to eat whilst they drink, they offered a good menu to choose from. Over the years, we pretty much tried most things on their menu. We had our favourites. Pork belly with lots of crispy crackling, all the pies but particularly their beef and ale, the chicken basket and chicken schnitzel. All very reasonably priced and delicious to eat. Unfortunately, Covid took its toll on the owners of many years and they were forced to sell. We have been there 4 times since the new owners took over. The price of the food has escalated and the quality has plummeted. Not one of the meals that we ate on the 4 occasions we have frequented Bosuns since the new owners took over have been nearly up to previous quality. We still gave them another chance with disastrous results. We arrived at the same time as two other tables. We seemed to be waiting for ages and then we noticed that both the other tables that had been there as long as us were half way through their meals. I called across the owner/manager. She then told me that they were waiting for the beef and guiness pie as it needed a longer time. I had not been advised of this up front. Usually the beef has already been slowly cooked and just the lid of the pastry had to be placed on top and put in the oven. Eventually one dish arrived, the chicken schitzel. Another time lapsed before the chicken strips arrived but without both sauces. Another 5 minutes before my pie arrived. What a disappointment. The pastry was no longer puff. The underneath of the pastry was not cooked through even tho the top was really browned. The beef was not great. Not the quality we had become accustomed to. Not one of the items ordered were worth the money we were charged. The owner, when I spoke to her, blamed her staff and tried to give me a lesson on the LRA. Inappropriate! She brought a citronella candle to our table as she said they had a lot of flies. Understandable, its hot. A little while later a fly flew into my husband's draft. We called the Waitron who offered to give him another but we would be charged for the replacement. Management is clearly not training staff. Not once after our interaction with the manager did she come to our table to find out whether our food had eventually arrived and whether it met our expectations. Not a place we will be visiting again in a hurry, as much as we will miss having a local.
