I was enjoying a meal and drinks with friends in the upstairs part of Bossa in Paradyskloof on Saturday the 27th September. My friends and I were watching the Spingboks play Argentina. During the match (in between the game talks and half time) the management of BOSSA saw fit to fill the restaurant with music. We had no problem with this approach to keeping the good atmosphere going. Our problem was the level of volume that was being used. It was seriously uncomfortable for all the 30 to 40 customers sitting up in that part of the restaurant. They were nearly all holding their ears and grimacing. Normal conversation was out of the question It was agreed that I should go downstairs and request management to turn the volume down for the uptairs part of the restaurant. I went downstairs, found the manager (who was very helpful) and the sound level was reduced. I was on my way back upstairs to join my friends when the volume of the music was put up to the same excruciating level level as before. I went down the stairs again to find the manager and was told that the owner (a Sean Murray) had instructed him to put the volume up again ! I asked to speak to Mr Murray. The conversation with Murray started off okay but I was taken aback when Murray told me three times that a) he was the owner of the restaurant b) he would run the music at whatever level he decided to do (regardless of any of his customer's wishes) c) and three times to "F off" if I didn't like the music. I tried to explain to Murray that it was not a problem with the type of music that was being played - it was the volume at which it was being played. Murray then decided to try to intimidate me by pushing his somewhat large body towards me and claiming that I was "getting in his way". He uttered some more of the expletives at this stage. I assured Murray that I was not trying to get in his way and was trying to have a conversation with him, on behalf of all his customers in the upstairs section of his restaurant. Murray's response to this not unreasonable request was that us "old doppies" should get a hearing aid. My last statement to Murray before going back to my table and friends was that I thought it a good idea that he revisited his understanding of what hearing aids are used for ! We will never go back to Bossa. Any restaurant owner that is as aggressive and that lacking in their understanding of the concept of how to handle customers (with money) does not deserve support. Please heed this warning as otherwise there is a danger that you will turn a really nice outing with your family and / or friends into a not so nice one - courtesy of Sean Murray ! I discovered that some of his staff are scared of him. Never good.
