WARNING! Beware of Booking.com’s Strict Refund Policy for Early Car Rental Returns
Life happens—not just 48 hours before you book a car, but also during your rental period. Unfortunately, Booking.com doesn’t seem to recognize this. I booked a car for 76 days, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I have to return overseas early. That means returning the car 29 days before my reservation ends. The rental company itself is able to re-rent the car, meaning they won’t lose money. Yet, because I booked through Booking.com, I am penalized for the full remaining amount with no refund.
Yes, Booking.com allows cancellations 48 hours before pickup, but what about when unexpected events occur after you’ve taken the car? Emergencies happen—whether it’s a family issue, an early departure, or something beyond your control—but Booking.com refuses to accommodate these situations. The car rental company is willing to refund the unused days, but Booking.com won’t allow it.
This isn’t about asking for special treatment—it’s about basic fairness. If the car can be re-rented, why should a customer be charged for days they can’t use it? My advice: think twice before booking through Booking.com. If flexibility matters to you, book directly with the rental company instead.
BOOKING.COM “It’s good to know you can receive some—even all—of your money back if you need to cancel a car reservation, as long as you notify the rental company beforehand. That said, the refund amount you receive depends on how much advance notice you provide: If you cancel more than 48 hours before your rental begins, you’ll receive a full refund. If you cancel less than 48 hours before your rental begins, including at the rental counter when you’re due to pick up the car, we’ll refund what you paid minus three days’ rental cost. For example, if you cancel a seven-day reservation, we’ll refund you four days’ worth of the rental price. Consequently, you won't receive a refund if your reservation is for three days or less.”
