FILTHY pillows at Sanbonani Hotel (and more)

Not impressed with the response I got from Sanbonani Hotel (Hazyview). Call it what you wish, but info on booking.com is misleading! We didn’t like the upstairs room because you have no immediate access to the garden. We were then given a key to unit 127, which we occupied for the night. Fair enough, the kettle wasn’t working. It was replaced. The aircon wasn’t working properly either and as mentioned to Rachel, the extractor fan in the bathroom doesn’t work. The basin tap was leaking (not dripping). The fitting was leaking to such extent that the back of the counter got flooded. We have a drought and there are severe penalties for wasting water. Why aren’t leakages reported to management?? The bathmat was paper thin. At least the ceiling fan was working. When I ordered drinks at the bar, I had to ask for a receipt, which I had to wait several minutes for. So where is the cash going if one needs to ask for a receipt? Paying R40 for a glass of wine is too much! A glass of wine and a double spirits and mix amounted to R94. At least the chef made an effort to give me a ‘no soya’ veg burger before the kitchen closed at 21:00. Thank you, the food was good.

Your reference to ‘preventative maintenance’ does not explain the filthy pillows. I have never seen such filthy pillows at any hotel or resort. We are members of a holiday club, we know what to expect for 986 a night – and that without breakfast! Out of desperation I doubled up 2 pillowcases to cover the pillows. We are South Africans. Not tourists hard up for somewhere ‘cheap’ to sleep close to KNP who spend their foreign currency on a ‘bargain’. We expect cleanliness and good value for money, which we clearly didn’t get. It is because of the state of those FILTHY pillows, etc., that I refused to stay another night and I explained this to Rachel, who assured me that we would get a refund if I contacted Wena who deals with all booking.com reservations..

When I made the booking (in order to attend a reunion), the money was immediately deducted from my credit card. The only reason why I chose Sanbonani was because a friend in Hazyview booked a facial for me (and a pedi for her) at Pause Spa for Friday morning. It made sense sleeping there. At the end of the day, I was so clogged up, puffy eyed and miserable the following morning, I cancelled the facial AND we had to impose on my friend because we didn’t get an immediate refund.

Peace of mind while traveling means one expects a clean and healthy sleeping environment. Why risk becoming infested with dust mites and bed bugs on your stays in hotels? Why would anyone want to expose themselves to a risk of allergy and asthma symptoms? Keeping an unprotected pillow is considered unsanitary and could cause or aggravate various health problems!

Why doesn’t Sanbonani use pillow protectors?

I am utterly disgusted. There is NO excuse for filthy pillows and we don’t appreciate getting **********. Why must I waste my time on more emails?! The offer of a credit is inconvenient and unacceptable. We aren’t interested in staying there again! I expect a full refund, including the night we stayed.

PS:

Clause 13 of the CPA refers:

RIGHT TO FAIR VALUE, GOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY

High quality services, which consumers are entitled to expect; Use, delivery or installation of goods that are free of defects and of a quality that persons are generally entitled to expect, if any such goods are required for performance of the services; Suppliers are required to remedy any defects in the quality of services performed or goods supp****, or refund the consumers a reasonable portion of the price paid for the services performed and goods supp****, in the event of these being sub-standard; The training and appointment of staff becomes material.

Safe and good quality goods

Consumers are entitled to receive goods or services that are of good quality, in good working order and free of any defects, and that comply with any applicable standards set under the Standards Act, No 29 of 1993, or any other public regulation. Sources of supply must be checked. Suppliers must obtain the necessary insurance to protect against any public liability.

Consumers also have the right to demand quality service and where such service falls short, to request that it be remedied or that the consumer receives a refund.

The Hospitality industry needs to comply to the CPA and tourism service providers can now also be held responsible if their products or environments cause harm, death or damage to any person on their property. Companies can no longer issue a general disclaimer. Instead, businesses must disclaim against specific risk areas.

FYI:

Pillows accumulate body fluids, sweat, drool, dust mites and possibly even bed bugs. The average person sweats ± a litre water a night. A pillow probably contains more fungal spores and bacteria than the average toothbrush. Pillow protectors keep pillows clean and can stop those common nasties from building up inside. They reduce allergen build-up. Up to 10% of a pillow’s weight could be made up of dust mite faeces. Dust mites and their faecal matter are among the most common causes of allergy and asthma symptoms. Pillows can also host other allergens (mold, pollen and pet dander). Protectors keep out bed bugs. They’re everywhere, infesting hotels, hospitals, apartment buildings, and mansions all across the globe. They’ll likely camp out on/or near the bed, staying comfortably close to their host (you). Bed bugs can hide in the mattress, bed frame and pillows. Pillow protectors are certified bed bug proof, specifically designed to keep the little blood suckers out of pillows.
