Useless in your time of need

My mom is on Bonitas Medical aid and was recently hospitalised with immense tummy and back ache, on investigation the doc found gall stones and has decided to remove her gallbladder. When he called for authorisation Thursday afternoon the response was they will not cover it as my mom has only been with them for 8 months, by the time my mom could call it was the public holiday and with no clarity on the issue she has been sent home for a long weekend with pain meds but still in need of the op.

How is it that on a top plan the cover for a required op is declined? And I am lost as to how there can be no skeleton staff on weekends especially for hospital authorisations?
