Urgent Complaint: Gross Negligence, Incorrect Advice, and Unacceptable Call Centre Delays

Bonitas is no longer the same. I am deeply disappointed and have entirely lost trust in this medical scheme.

On 7 August 2026, I called Bonitas to request authorization to see a specialist. The consultant explicitly told me that on the BonSave option, a pre-authorization is not required and that I only needed a referral letter from my GP. Relying entirely on this professional advice, I attended my specialist appointment on 27 August 2026.

To my absolute shock, the specialist claim was rejected and not paid, despite the fact that I have more than R10,000 remaining in my medical savings account. For the past two weeks, I have been trying to resolve this nightmare. I have repeatedly called the pre-authorization department with zero luck. Each time, I am forced to hold for over an hour without anyone answering.

This raises critical questions for Bonitas management: How are members supposed to see vital specialists if your staff gives wrong information and your authorization department refuses to answer the phone? What is the purpose of having a medical savings account if Bonitas blocks access to it? Do you realize that your internal inefficiencies put lives at risk? People could die while waiting hours on the phone trying to get urgent hospital authorizations. Bonitas management, you need to wake up before you lose your members when the 2027 renewal period arrives. I expect an immediate review of my rejected specialist claim, a callback from a senior manager, and the correct allocation of my benefits. Regretful member, Phumzile Chavalala
