Don't join Bonitas Medical Aid

I joined Bonitas in 2023 from Momentum. When I spoke with the consultant, I made it perfectly clear that I wasn't worried about day to day, optometry or dental, but I need to be covered for hospital and emergencies. It was made clear the their Network Hospital is Netcare, which suited me. It was made clear that Doctors must be in the Network. On 31 December, I couldn't handle stomach cramps any longer as they were getting worse and I had them already for 4 days. I called Bonitas and asked for doctors in my area who are on tne Network. Being 31 December, I couldn't find a doctor working. The guy at Bonitas suggested I go to Netcare N1 City. I asked if everything will be cover and he said yes as they or part of the network. Off I went to emergency at Netcare. I finally got to see a doctor. He was concerned and decided that bloods should be taken and he put me on a drip. I was in emergency till 8.00 pm when I was discharged with a script for medication, which came to R2000.00. Bonitas rejected it at the pharmacy, so I paid for it. Weeks later I get and invoice for co payment of the Doctor, then an invoice from the hospital for R1016.00, which Bonitas wouldn't pay, then I got an invoice from Ampath for R996.20. Bonitas only paid a portion of the doctors charges and nothing else. When I called, I was told that the services were not on tne Network, so they won't pay. I would hate to know what would happen if I was dying, Bonitas would not cover and that is why I joined them. Their advert on TV is a lie. False advertising, as they are not their for you. The one time I got ill and turned to Bonitas, I was not protected.
